This comes from the idea of freedom and I wrote it while I was watching Obama’s inaugural speech.
Art is compassion
Art is generosity
Art is listening
Art will listen to you
Art is personal - it’s about you (because you are the one connecting with it)
We all need to talk in times of fear
We all need to talk in times of joy
We need to talk and we need to be heard
We need to be understood and made to feel welcome with our emotions, no matter how irrational we fear they may be
We need to feel that we are not alone
Art doesn’t give you choice, it gives you the freedom to choose.
Art doesn’t give you freedom of expression, it gives you the freedom to express.
This, finally, links into something that might be a language to describe the social value of the arts.
